What Confuses You Most About Diabetes?
My partner has recently been diagnosed with diabetes, and even though I already knew a bit more than the average person about it, the news still floored us. We both read a lot about it, but so much information seemed contradictory, especially around food!! I'd love to know what some things are that confused you when you were diagnosed, or maybe still confuse you.
Welcome to the best diabetic community you will find, @A DiabetesTeam Member . I'm still new to all this Diabetes 2 stuff (I was diagnosed in October 2015). The most confusing aspect of managing this disease is the food. You are right. There is a lot of contradicting information and advice out there. Everyone's story is a bit different.
What works for me is connecting with a dietitian who specializes in Diabetes 2 management. Together, we worked out a plan that works for me and my family. My husband joins me at the meetings as he is part of the management process too. He cooks a lot and does most of the grocery shopping.
I am still a work in progress, but food management is becoming easier as time progresses. The biggest bit that I've learned is wrapping my head around moderation. I can still indulge, but sparingly.
There is a term called confounders. These are factors that can make figuring out your treatment very difficult. The biggest confounder for me is pain. When I am in pain my sugar levels soar. Stress can also mess up a perfectly planned day. I also notice that as I get sick I can get unpredictable lows. My only recourse is to test often and work at it.
2 carbs (30 gm) per meal is your limit, but you are allowed 2 snacks, which I limit to 1 carb each (15 gm), for a total of 8. But most days, I only eat 2 full meals and 2 snacks, so 6 is my normal amount of carbs on a normal day. It's entirely up to you and your lifestyle. I am more sedentary, so I don't eat as much.
I do 130 carbs per day, some days i don't and I write down everything that i eat. Yes its very time consuming but it keeps me on track. Remember to walk at least a mile per day or more if you can. Peace and Blessings
When I say 50 carbs I don't mean 50 x 15....I mean 50 total carbs. 9 x 15, I've been taught is too many. Eat to your meter and test test test.
