My Recent A1C Was 5.5-why Do I Still Get Low Bg?

A DiabetesTeam Member asked a question 💭
Annapolis, MD

I had another low yesterday evening 58 (3.2) at 11pm. I ate 1/2 green apple with almond butter and it raised to 85 in 20 mins. I discovered that I had eaten only around 100 carbs that day, instead of my usual 130+ and believe that may be the reason. I am trying to reduce my daily caloric intake to under 1400 (and also fasting at least 12 hours). But why does that happen? I knew high carbs were a problem-but why are low carbs? Also, is this "normal"?

I have improved my prediabetic A1C. And take… read more

5.5 Becky5 is very good just try keeping it on a single digit and it would be fine. Good.luck with that.

BS levels are never static they move around all the time. When I get 3.6 and 3.8 you can be sure I had a higher number and it dropped. My A1C was 6.8 but at time I got my bloodwork done I was 6. A1C numbers are related but different to our daily numbers. I usually find for me when I have a low number unexpectedly at some point I was high and it dropped. I am trying to keep a more steady number even if it’s a bit higher as I hate lows. I live alone and would be in serious trouble if I couldn’t call for help! I am sure someone can explain this @A DiabetesTeam Member

@A DiabetesTeam Member Much appreciated Graham. Well, that's enlightening (and scarry).
And makes sense, given my past history of occasionally bingeing on carbs, (but eating pretty healthy otherwise) which may explain how I got to be pre-diabetic "under the radar".

Also, the info you provide is timely. Having lost 40 pounds, I suspect I now need to switch my focus from weight loss to learning to keep tight control of my bg. I have had to "tag-team" all along it feels, like trying to put out different fires, at the same time. (and driving myself crazy in the process)

This may also shed new light on how I came to have this problem, in the first place. So far, I figured that I could be the "poster child" for the obesity epidemic and the health issues that follow. But now I am considering that my bingeing on carbs from time to time, could possibly do as much, if not more, damage, by the spikes it must cause. I remain grateful for your help. Thank you.

@A DiabetesTeam Member you have to remember that A1C is just a measure of your "average" blood sugar over a 90'ish day period

An A1C of 6.5% equates to an average BG reading of 140 or 7.8 mmols

But that is all it tells you

A person who "ranges" between 120 and 160 has a "140 average"

A person who ranges between 60 and 220 still has a 140 average

One is always in a tight range the other sees both hypo's and significant hypers yet their A1C is exactly the same at 6.5%

A1C is decent all round test to determine management level. But you can see the flaw based on my example above

The one with the tight range would develop "no complications" while the other would die prematurely of either kidney disease or heart failure despite having a well controlled A1C of 6.5% (which would leave some scratching their heads)

That is why those that are serious about management have to use a few more testing techniques than strictly an A1C

You note that you get "lows" - so for that to be the case you must sometime get "significant highs" in order to "average out" and that suggests that your A1C, which is otherwise excellent, is not telling "you" the whole story
