Emotional Health and Diabetes

Posted on April 27, 2018

Managing diabetes can be emotionally challenging. Members of DiabetesTeam say constantly managing blood-sugar levels, medications, and a multitude of symptoms gets them “down.” “I'm just so tired and frustrated I want to scream,” wrote one member. “Every time something new comes up with my health, the answer is always diabetes will cause that. Trying to keep stress under control is hard,” said another.

Many members swear by meditation to manage the ups and downs of diabetes. “I recently started a Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction class, which I believe is slowly helping me,” shared one DiabetesTeam member. Another agreed: “I meditate daily and have noticed a huge difference in reducing my stress.”

Other members have eased stress with exercise, reading, yoga, walks in nature, and even taking a cooking class. “It's a great way to meet people and find low-carb meals you can really enjoy,” said one member. One woman keeps stress in check with a diabetes buddy. “You can make bets about who can get their numbers better,” she explained. “Makes it fun and helps you both reach goals.” Being able to share feelings with others who “get it” is important for managing diabetes stress.
