Overview
Admelog is a rapid-acting insulin analog approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to improve glycemic control (control of blood sugar levels) in adults and children with diabetes mellitus. Admelog is suitable for individuals with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes who require rapid-acting insulin as part of their diabetes management plan. Admelog is also known by its drug name, insulin lispro.

As a rapid-acting insulin analog, Admelog starts working shortly after injection, helping to manage blood sugar levels around meals. It is believed to work by mimicking the body's natural insulin, allowing cells to absorb glucose (sugar) from the bloodstream more efficiently, thus lowering blood sugar levels.

How do I take it?
Prescribing information states that Admelog is taken by subcutaneous (under the skin) injection, typically administered within 15 minutes before a meal or immediately after eating. Injection sites can include the abdomen, thigh, upper arm, or buttocks, and it’s important to rotate these sites to minimize skin issues. Admelog can also be delivered via continuous subcutaneous infusion using an insulin pump, following the pump manufacturer’s instructions, or by intravenous (IV) infusion under medical supervision. Admelog should be used exactly as prescribed by a health care provider.

Side effects
Common side effects of Admelog include hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), allergic reactions, injection site reactions, lipodystrophy (changes in fat distribution under the skin), pruritus (itchiness), and rash.

Rare but serious side effects may include severe hypoglycemia, hypersensitivity reactions (which can be life-threatening), hypokalemia (low potassium levels), and heart failure when used with certain medications called thiazolidinediones. Additionally, insulin pump malfunctions can lead to high blood sugar and ketoacidosis, a serious condition.
