INSULIN ANALOG
Overview
Lyumjev is a rapid-acting insulin analog approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to improve blood sugar control in adults and children with diabetes mellitus. It is suitable for both type 1 and type 2 diabetes and is typically prescribed alongside an intermediate or long-acting insulin for more comprehensive blood sugar management. Lyumjev is also known by its drug name, insulin lispro.
As a rapid-acting insulin, Lyumjev works quickly after injection to help manage blood sugar spikes that occur with meals. It mimics the body’s natural insulin response to food intake, allowing for tighter blood sugar control, especially when taken right before or soon after meals.
How do I take it?
Prescribing information states that Lyumjev is administered by subcutaneous (under the skin) injection into areas such as the abdomen, thigh, upper arm, or buttocks, or by continuous infusion via an insulin pump for certain patients. It should be taken either at the start of a meal or within 20 minutes afterward. In some cases, Lyumjev may also be given intravenously (through an IV) under medical supervision. Dosage and administration vary based on individual needs, so it is essential to take Lyumjev exactly as prescribed by a health care provider.
Side effects
Common side effects of Lyumjev include hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), reactions at the injection or infusion site, rash, pruritus (itching), lipodystrophy (fat redistribution) at the injection site, and weight gain.
Rare but serious side effects may include severe hypoglycemia, hypokalemia (low potassium levels), severe allergic reactions (such as anaphylaxis), fluid retention, and heart failure when used with certain other medications. Device malfunction when used with an insulin pump can also lead to hyperglycemia (high blood sugar) and diabetic ketoacidosis (a serious diabetes complication).
