Is There Any Pain Involved In Diabetic Retinopathy Treatments And What Is Recovery Like?

Does anyone have experience with laser/ injections in the eyes for damage to the retina caused by weak and leaking blood vessels? I'm nervous about the whole idea of injections into the eye.

I have had many laser.treatments in the last 20 yrs or so. Very little pain just uncomfortable. I have alsi had quite a few eye injections, first time was very scary but did not hurt at all just like a snall mosquito prick not so bad . I have also just gone through eye surgery where he goes inside the eye ball with something like a vacum and sucked up a large amount of dried blood on my retina because of too many bleeds and laser treatments to cauterize the bleeding vessels, at that time he also replaced the lenses in my eyes. The whole procedure was cimpletely painless and took about an hour. Completely back to norm in about 2 weeks. If not for the surgery I would be completely blind by now. Well worth it.

I live in Red Deer and have to travel to Edmonton for the injection in the eye. I was informed that the left eye was leaking. If I did nothing it would eventually become a problem in the right eye as well. The injections were not a problem as they squirt a freezing grop in the eye ball. The injection is just a mere poke and doesn't hurt. There were two side effects that I had to get used to: first there was a feeling like I had gravel in the eye and it remained for about two days. Secondthere was a bubble type of a floatie the appears in the eye. I floats across the line of sight. I nick named it "Herman". As long as I can see Herman I don't set anything that I'm holding down. It distorts my vision. After about two days the side effects are gone and it's back to normal. My last visit to Edmonton I was informed that the next one was to be my last. The injections had done their job my eye was almost totally dry. Yahoo all that's left is to do follow up visits just to make sure everything is going well. Hope that helps

I've had Osurdex(dexamethasone) injections in my eye. It's a small implant that releases medication to reduce inflammation. But my Uvitis isn't because of Diabetes but Behcet's. You should reseach and ask your provider. The very first time was not the best of experience but it's not as bad now.

John, thanks so much for your detailed answer as it has provided me with relief and hope. Fear of the unknown can really wreak havoc! Again many thanks. I would ask my doctor doing th job but he is not the most pleasant fellow but is apparently on of the best in this area which is more important than him being my pal :-)
