Yes, it can be. It's similar to people who have high morning readings. If you go too long without food, the liver dumps glucose which gives the higher readings.

Having said that, I do not get high blood sugar when fasting because I am on a ketogenic diet. My body does not run on carbs, only fat. Carbs are not necessary for a healthy body. There is no such thing as and "essential" carb.

It is not typical for blood sugar levels to rise significantly during fasting. Normally, fasting blood sugar levels should be between 4 to 6 mmol/L (72 to 108 mg/dL). If your blood sugar levels are rising to 150 mg/dL during fasting, it may indicate an issue that needs to be addressed. It is important to consult with your Show Full Answer

Actually, I was on insulin when my morning readings were high. I don't need it any more though.

It all depends on if you are on insulin or not. If you are not on insulin, as GailBourne mentioned, the liver kicks in and dumps. If you are on insulin, chances are you will become lower. When I have fasted for a medical test where I was fasting for a few days, I had to be really careful about my blood sugar dropping, even when my insulin doses were decreased.

Just a side note: I have been told by my diabetes educator's that if you exercise when your blood sugar is 200 + it WILL cause your blood sugar to spike more.

@A DiabetesTeam Member I think he was talking about fasting, not exercising.
