Has Anyone Had Type 2 For More Then 20 Years And Been Able To Just Take Diabetes Meds For Bs Control Without Also Having To Take Insulin?
…yeah, but if you’re in Medicare’s “Donut hole” -You’re deep fried!!
There are many new generational drugs to combat diabetes and (possibly) keep ya off insulin…
Just one problem: Can One Afford Them??
Whether someone can avoid insulin is made up of many factors none of which is usually black and white.
Gday
My Great-Grandfather whom I remember well had Type 2 (called Sugar Diabetes when he was diagnosed) for 51 years and never took any meds at all. His daughter, my Grandmother, had Type 2 for well over 20 years and never took a med either. My father broke that streak and ended up on both oral meds and Basil and Bolus insulin before he died of complications.
I come from a huge diabetic family with over 2 dozen members and counting - only 5 ever went on insulin and most of us have been/were diagnosed in our early 50's - so yes, 80% of those who have passed on had Type 2 for over 20 years and never went on insulin with about 25% never being on any meds at all.
A lot rests with the individual as to whether or not they will need insulin. Get control early and keep it as long as possible and you reduce your chance of ever needing insulin. Of course, there will always be some that require it no matter how involved they are in their own care/control, but statistically only about 1 in 5 Type 2's ever progress far enough to require insulin.
Especially now, there is a whole basket load of drugs, that didn't even exist 5 or 10 years ago to keep you off insulin if you aren't using it already.
I have had it 42 years and i am not on insulin. I had taken it when I was pregnant with my son and after my triple by pass. Certain diabetic drugs dont agree with their knock out drugs.
I have been a type 2 diabetic for almost 30 years. I do not use insulin. I take glipizide er.
Hi JerseyGirl- Sounds like you are on the right track.
