Blurred Vison

A DiabetesTeam Member asked a question 💭
Derby, UK

By the end of day in the evening I get tired and my vision get very blurred and when I wake up in the morning I have a headache. I am 64 yeay old and have retired. I have had diabetes for about 10 years. Am on metformin 2000 ml slow release at night. 6 months check 8.6, 3 months 7.9 and recently 7.3 going the right way. What could be wrong?

Blurred vision is a very common (side effect) of high blood sugar

And while your numbers are going in the right direction, they are still high enough to cause the eye problems

If you can get down below 7.0 that should improve things and if you can manage down to 6.5 the blurriness should go away completely (at least on a regular basis) unless you have done some permanent damage to the small blood vessels in your eyes

Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness (Diabetic Retinopathy and Macular Edema) in persons under age 65 which should give most of us that extra kick in the butt to control our blood sugar better and also the reason that all diabetics should have an annual eye exam with an eye doctor and not just an optometrist, to look for early signs

If you see your eye doctor they can check you for cataracts just in case that’s causing your vision to be blurry. I have them in both eyes but not yet bad enough for surgery. I often get a headache from higher sugar’s

2. Diabetic Macular Edema (DME):
- Swelling of the macula due to diabetes.
- Symptoms include blurred vision, floaters, wavy vision, light sensitivity, headaches, and trouble focusing and reading.

3. Cataracts:
- Clouded areas in the lens of the eye.
- Symptoms include blurred vision and bright colors appearing dull or yellow.

4. Retinal Vein Occlusion (RVO):
- Blockage of veins that carry blood away from the retina.
- Symptoms include blurry vision and the inability to see out of one eye.

Regular eye check-ups are crucial to detect and manage these conditions early.
