What Does Anybody Know About The Thing You Can Wear To Check Blood Sugar?
Hi @A DiabetesTeam Member,
It sounds like you are asking about a CGM. A Continuous Glucose Monitoring Device.
A Dexcom works for 10 days and measures every 5 minutes.
A Libre works for 14 days and measures every 15 minutes.
They are slightly less accurate than a finger stick. And the readings run about 15-30 minutes behind.
They measure glucose levels in the interstitial fluid.
The finger sticks measure blood glucose in the capillary blood.
Correct placement and attachment is so important.
CGMs are great tools for experimentation. You can check out each food and see how each affects your blood glucose numbers.
They also show trends and whether you levels are rising or falling. Alarms can warn you about too low levels, and too high levels.
Most insurances will cover them if you are insulin dependent.
Any other questions, just ask.
Go to Abbott, the manufacturer of the FreeStyle Libre and fill out the form. That should qualify you for that cgm.
Did you ask about the Freestyle Libre
as of july 2023 abbott stopped giving out free libres. In order to qualify at the time you needed to have a prescription for one. There is a new Chinese one just launched which is issuing free samples(sorry the name escapes me atm)
I remember Hkc putting on here for someone about how to get a free freestyle Libre for 30 days or 2 weeks i can't remember which but it was there website page telling how to get it
