What Exactly Is Diabetes Reversal Or Remission?
Remission is now a consensus definition that states its a condition where the A1C of a diagnosed Type 2 Diabetic is below 6.5% (48 mmol/mol in the metric A1C scale) for minimally 90 days "without the use of any anti-diabetic medications"
To remain in remission you must maintain a sub-6.5% A1C, without medication, on each successive A1C test

My A1C has been below 6.5 % since March 2020, I managed to get off diabetic medications after 9 months and when diagnosed in August 2019 my A1C was 11.9 %. The advice many people in here gave me is what helped me manage my diabetes to the point of going into remission since May 2020. It takes discipline and I weight and measure everything I eat, yes for some it seems tedious to do so, but for me it is the only way I can manage my diabetes by knowing exactly what is in my food portion. I rarely eat foods without nutrition labels, or I look it up online, most meat I eat 100 g as on wrappers behind the package they indicate a portion as being 100 g, but some I can eat up to 150 g. It has been 3 yrs now that I manage with diet alone, some of my other health issues have improved also with diet changes. But even if I am in remission, when one of 5 autoimmune diseases act up, or my other GI diseases, my numbers do go up, after catching Covid Jan 2022 my numbers were up for about 5 months, but not high enough for doctor to put me back on diabetic medication. So yes even when in remission we need to be vigilent and continu whatever diet we used to go into remission, it is not a free pass to eat as we used to. Yes I allow myself 1 treat per day, but keep my Carbs to 15 Net when eating those treat. I eat the occasional pizza but no more then 2 slices of a medium or my numbers skyrocket. Being in remission is a good thing, but diabetes is still there. The same happens to people while on medications, their numbers are good because of the medications, but if you go back to your old ways you may need more medications in the long run. It all comes to discipline, get to know how your diabetes works. When I was diagnosed my sugar levels were between 17.5 (USA 315) and 19.2 (USA 346). The diabetic medications helped bring down my numbers over a 9 month period, then I have been solo with diet alone. There is nothing wrong with taking diabetes medications but if you can manage your diet it helps a lot.
I have 18 diseases with no cure, 5 are autoimmune, so for me I know that those diseases do go into remission at times, but they are still there, I get flare ups and so on, therefore remission is not a cure, it just means we are doing our best to work with how our bodies function. Yet despite those diseases which cause a lot of havoc and inflammation, I still managed to go into diabetes remission, when I flare up as with many diabetics our numbers go up, so during these times I am more vigilent about my diabetes, it does not take much to tip you over the line. Once a diabetic always a diabetic, we need to keep that in our minds, it is not a free pass. Yes treat yourself once in a while within portions. If 1 portion suggests 50 g, only eat 25 g, this way you get the treat but not all the Carbs. It is all about portion control, which is why I have a kitchen scale which is used daily.
I was told by my doctor and by a diabetic educator that it's OK to cheat every now and then because if not you set yourself up to. Fail That you can pretty much eat anything But that you have to portion it that but that healthy eating is encouraged. But not everybody can always get all the good food especially with inflation its just so freaking high right now. I'm barely able to afford my housing Don't get me wrong nothing is priority over health I do the best I can..... I'm not a cook. I'm not a good cook. I never knew how to cook I just tried to buy food that's healthy for you. That's all I can do I don't eat huge amounts. I'm still in the learning process I guess cause i'm just not a good cook at all.. I work so many hours that I just don't feel like cooking . I suffer from back and hip pain So that doesn't make things? Any. Better either? I have a hard time standing that the last thing I want to do is cut.. I'm going to have surgery soon to get my hip replaced so much is going on right now. I've always had a big fear of going under anesthesia for surgery. It's been like that almost all my life. I had a bad experience when they did shoulder surgery one time.. but I'm tired of almost falling down and hurting myself. I'm barely able to work because of my hip being so bad. I do have a bad back too but my hip is the one that's really bothering me the most... Like I said I have so much going on
@A DiabetesTeam Member hello to you from the sunny Australian Sunshine Coast on Friday afternoon here today and are you saying that I am therefore “ in Remission” from late onset Diabetes type2 this year. Since my January blood test results my blood sugar levels are constantly lower at around 5 to 5.8 in the morning after coffee but before eating.
I have been told by my doctor that I don’t need to take Metformin 500ng that I am no longer a Diabetic.. I still watch shat I eat eg no ice cream and very few sweet cakes
I am feeling relaxed and relatively pain free today Friday afternoon and I am enjoying my afternoon
