The "guidelines" (written by diabetes experts and used by at least all the countries represented in this group) suggest that at least initially there is little clinical value in regular blood sugar testing

SMBG or Self Monitored Blood Glucose aka a "stick test" IS required by insulin and sulfonylurea users to watch for a dangerous low or to make insulin adjustments

If you are simply on Metformin, the only Tier 1 drug which is almost always the first prescribed, there is almost zero danger of low blood sugar because of the drug, so the guidance says testing is not necessary for the "Doctors benefit" - they do all their dosing/adding new drugs based on an A1C "lab test"

However, most of us in this gang are into "self management" so we use testing to determine if we ate something we shouldn't have (and correct that) and to help identify if something changes (we look for trends and patterns) to advise the Doc or so there is no big surprise when we do our next (lab) blood test

So short answer (sorry) - it is completely normal and recommended to your Doc that they "not suggest" at home daily testing upon initial diagnosis

Other doctors may suggest it because there is "personal value", but they are not going to rely on your "stick tests" to make any treatment decisions

Here is the actual (instruction) to the doctors:

Regular self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG) may help with self-management and medication adjustment, particularly in individuals taking insulin.

SMBG plans should be individualised. People with diabetes and the healthcare team
should use the data in an effective and timely manner.

In people with type 2 diabetes not using insulin, routine glucose monitoring is of limited additional clinical benefit while adding burden and cost

Diana - I’m a bit confused by your question. I assume your care team has prescribed a meter and strips and you’re just not using them? Or?
