Dehydration

A DiabetesTeam Member asked a question 💭
Thousand Palms, CA

Went on short trip. Up until trip I have been WNL on strips for a month. The day of my journey home I had no access to water and felt dehydrated. My glucose on strips went to 200 several times. I drank 16 oz bottle of water and glucose dropped WNL. Can dehydration or fast food cause this?

Good morning @A DiabetesTeam Member, and warriors.

Fast food has lots of carbs.
A small hamburger, small fries, small soda is about 150 carbs. Most newly diagnosed with diabetes can handle 100-130 net carbs spread equitable throughout 3-5 meals and 1-2 snacks. Baby steps.

So that is more carbs than they can tolerate in a day in one meal. And if you went medium or large on anything that is even more carbs. Baby steps.

Carbs cause glucose spikes. Glucose spikes are the enemy. I keep my numbers in TITR, time in tight range, 4.0(72) to 7.8(140). This prevents additional cumulative vascular damage, that causes and adds to, diabetes complications and comorbidities. Baby steps.

That is the number of carbs I can tolerate in 10 days. I can only tolerate 5 carbs per meal and keep my numbers where they need to be. Baby steps.

I haven't even mentioned that dehydration causes a more concentrated and higher blood glucose number. Baby steps.

When I eat fast food, no fries, no bread, no soda. I order a hamburger with lettuce only with a water. Or I just take the burger off the bun and throw the bun away. Baby steps.

This is what I need to do to control my diabetes journey. Baby steps.

Do what you need to do.
And never give up, never surrender, never ever.
You got this.
Have a wonderful day.

Dehydration can be a symptom of hyperglycemia (high blood sugar) in people with diabetes. Here are some key points:

- Frequent Urination: Hyperglycemia causes the body to try to clear out excess sugar through urine, leading to frequent urination.
- Extreme Thirst: As you lose more fluids through urination, you can become dehydrated, which causes extreme thirst and dry mouth.
- Cycle of Dehydration: Drinking more fluids to replenish what is lost can lead to more frequent urination, perpetuating the cycle of dehydration.

If you experience these symptoms, it's important to manage your blood sugar levels and stay hydrated.

My doctor says wants to run second blood test in October before sending me to dietician. You helped me with carb count. Really appreciate it
