Is There An Alternative To Metformin?
I think I have read this question a half dozen times in the past two days - so what is the answer since it gets asked often
First off, what even is Metformin?
Metformin is the ONLY Tier 1 anti-diabetic medication out there
It is a derivative of the French Lilac (Goat's Rue) so it is both a Natural and Traditional - however, in it's traditional form it is not very effective so it was turned into pharmaceutical grade back in 1957 and has been the "first" drug prescribed to Type 2's for many… read more
Essentially the same program is available as well in the UK
The program itself was a result of the DiRECT Trial (Diabetes Remission Clinical Trial) done in the UK and they now offer the program called the "Path to Remission" - have to request through your Doctor
Those are remission programs and will absolutely work if done correctly and you are otherwise physiologically capable of remission (some have too much damage to the pancreas) and that is not the same as "needing" a medication
80% or more of the "newly diagnosed" could avoid using meds but most simply can't/won't do the work necessary so a Tier 1 med is necessary
I was simply trying to address the alternatives if you need it
But as one who used the same method as the program you note to get control of myself, I agree it's a great way to avoid metformin if you are "all in with no excuses"
@A DiabetesTeam Member I will suggest it was probably Glyburide which is a 2nd gen Sulfonylurea and until the new stuff came along was the most prescribed diabetes med in Canada next to metformin
It forces your pancreas to make extra insulin so works on any blood sugar from any source but CAN cause dangerous lows, and Glyburide is one of the (worst) for causing lows with up to 1 in 3 users - so you have to be vigilant about testing and being aware of low symptoms
But the stuff works great
@GrahmLamb Isn't there one other medicine hmm I was on ..I think it is called Glybuteride when I was gestational. Not certain the spelling.
Still, for me Insulin is wonderful. Why do I personally feel this way?? As I lose weight and get healthier I can lessen it or increase it as needed and then call the doctor and let her know what I am sitting at. I have gone from 39 units of my long-acting down to 33. I'm very proud and am trying to get lower
@A DiabetesTeam Member yes there is a great program in the US - believe it is available in person (some cities) but also on-line
It's called the Stanford Program
https://stanfordhealthcare.org/medical-clinics/...
Ontario even offers it as in person classes at some of our Urgent Care (hospitals) - I sat through it in Kingston, Ontario
It is not specifically the "remission" program like the other two mentioned, but they have a number of (modules) covering all aspects of Diabetes
I have come off metformin and I’m doing great. I have been taking a program online for diabetics and it has helped me immensely. I would recommend it to anyone. The program is free for BC, Alberta and Ontario at this present time but they are always updating their program. It’s guided by doctors and dietitians. You get a very in depth blood work up to tell exactly what is the extent of your body function. It’s called Lifestylerx.10. You have access to everything that they offer once you take their program. I feel a lot better now
