How Much Food?
When managing diabetes, portion control is crucial. How do you typically determine the right amount of food to eat in one sitting, and how many meals or snacks do you aim for each day? Additionally, are you curious about the benefits of fasting for diabetes management, and if so, what kind of foods and portion sizes are recommended during fasting periods?
I follow a fairly well established 4 meal a day plan (no snacks)
Each meal is 4 to 5 hours apart and I aim for each meal being "about" 500 calories and target 25 carbs (but can vary up to 30 or 35 with some meals)
I determined what I could eat by testing before and after a given meal, at least 3 or 4 times over the course of a few months (yes, lots of stick tests) and determined which meals with a given portion size were "safe" and if they weren't, small adjustments were made until there were safe to eat
It took us decades to develop the bad eating habits which certainly contributed to our diagnosis. So we should not expect to change the way we eat overnight. It took me a good two years to get my "new way of eating" established and I have tweaked it over the past 6 or 7 years - it constantly evolves
Thank you for the message. This is my journey now.
