What Is Your Experience With Breakfast. Even Oats Spikes Blood Sugar Significantly. Any Experience You Can Share?
Type 1 diabetic with Medtronic pump
I'm ok with one Weetabix with milk( and sometimes blueberries) but two sends my bs soaring.
Thanks Andro. So interesting how different everyone is. My husband doesn't do well on Weetbix either. Needless to say, no sugar or artificial is used. I've gone the egg route and bake a muffin like egg with veg (mushrooms, peppers) and egg on top. That works well. I'm going to try and switch to more protein (such as sardines ) and have also made chia seeds soaked with almond milk and Bulgarian low fat yoghurt. That works well.
It's all about your "carb tolerance"
Mine is up near 30 carbs, Henry @A DiabetesTeam Member is down near 3 carbs
So in my case I can handle 1/4 cup (dry) of steel cut oats which comes in at 27 carbs (23 net) and my blood sugar would still be in an acceptable range
Henry would have to spread that 1/4 cup over TEN MEALS for it to be "safe for him"
If your numbers went out of range then you can either cut the "portion size" of the oatmeal until you find the amount that is "safe for you" or opt more fat/protein in your breakfast - like Pat's suggestion, eggs are great for a bunch of reasons but for diabetics they are ultra low carb (about 1), high protein and contain Omega 3's (which we need and can't make internally ourselves so need an outside source)
Until your figure out your "safe carb number per meal" - think of it like your allowance, it's really tough to know "what/how much of what" you can eat
Eggs.i regularly eat 2 boiled or poached with one slice wholemeal toast, low fat spread, coffee with a little milk- doesn't spike...... but then I am type 2.
From my experience - oats is very healthy but has hidden carbs and spikes my sugar quite a lot. As a Type 1 I see the effects of food much more clearly and quickly than Type 2s'. And yes, I know it has much fiber but be careful. And raw oats is always better than cooked oats. Raw oats absorbs slower than cooked, but it still has a high carb result.
Lynne, I see you live in South Africa so I recommend WeetBix. I found it to absorb the best and keep sugar levels the most stable of all the cereals that is available in South Africa. And I mix mine with some plain smooth low fat yoghurt... makes it double healthy and helps keep sugar stable. And obviously don't have it with sugar. If you need some "sweet" with it, I recommend Xylitol, as it is the best and healthiest sugar alternative, and it is also good for your digestive system. Just keep it away from pets, especially dogs.
Else, eggs on whole wheat bread is always a winner. :)
