Weight Loss

A DiabetesTeam Member asked a question 💭
Roodepoort, Gauteng

I find it so strange that after my diabetes diagnoses in March, i obv relooked and adjusted my diet. I eat much more healthier now than ever, but I don't lose weight. I know one of my bipolar meds has a risk of weight increase, but for the past year my weight stayed constant with a 1kg up or down over time. Any suggestions? I'm 63 years old and read that the older you get the more difficult it is to lose weight. I'm 10kgs overweight and would love to lose it.

Adding more water is often helpful in weight loss. Also supplements to increase your metabolism.

@A DiabetesTeam Member I lost 50 lbs slowly over a couple years. What helped me most was to set a daily calorie limit and stick to it-as much as possible. 1500 calories a day was what I started with. After losing weight I needed to lower it again, to around 1300, but have a hard time sticking to that and eat more like 1400. I had never counted calories before and started using a free app called FatSecret to do the math and keep track for me. It also tracks other things like carbs, fats, sugar, sodium, calories, etc,,,,, Good luck-paying close attention to the nutrients in foods is a real eye opener!

I've lost quite a bit of weight over quite a bit of time! About 110 lbs. over 20 years! I find when I am most successful I'm tracking my food using an app, and drinking my water. I find I fall off the wagon here and there, but I've been pretty good about not gaining anything back...so I might lose 10 lbs. and be 'stuck' for months, then get motivated again and lose some more. I've added lots of walking over the last 2 or 3 years as well. My biggest problem is focusing on the importance of my blood sugar numbers (and eating for health!) and not the number on the scale...so that's what I'm currently trying to do.

Hi Jureen,
Valerie here. I have a real issue with weight loss. Been Diabetic for a long time, 63 years old now. Living in Johannesburg SA. Lately I have been going for a long list if tests, in preparation for Laprascopic Bariatric sleeve surgery. It took me over a year to eventually decided and agreed to have the surgery. It has always been hard for me to loose weight, I envy others. I don't have a date as yet, but I still have 2 more tests to do and juggle work in between. Hope the best for you
Lots of love and bear hugs
Valerie

I do some wall push- ups, helps with upper body strength. Put you on some music you like, and if your able to dance, dance, dance. I do a lot of dancing, good form of exercise, and you don't think about it being exercise. You can do it Jureen, I know you can.
