I Have Noticed I Have Become Lactose Intolerant In The Last Year. I How Many Has This Happened To As Well?
I noticed after drinking milk or eating cheese my stomach would cramp terribly, started the Lactaid enzymes, really helps.
@ Joyce586I used to drink lots of Jamba Juice because they advertised it as dairy free only made from fruit. That was a lie. The fine print which I couldn't read at the time said with dairy products or fat free yogurt. Whatever, to the tune of 1100 cals in a small glass that wasn't my jumbo glasses they advertised also. Within an hour, running to the bathroom.
When I worked ER nights my first go to drink was Monster drinks with the green label. I thought one night I was having a heart attack. Nope I stopped the Monster drinks and gave the case of them to a coworker I knew who loved them. The amount of citrus in one can was a killer and the extra energy gave me tremors. I brought a case of bottled water every month after that. Now my diet doesn't allow citrus in it because it causes hyperparathyroidism.
So it's not just milk I fear. Orange juice for hypoglycemia is too high in citrus for me. In grammar school I was only kid who could have Hershey bars in my purse. Long before glucose tabs were a thing OTC.

I buy the Octonuts Almond Protein Powder unflavored and vanilla flavor(replaces all milk for me). 1 serving of 35 grams ((scooper included), 6 grams of fiber, 1 simple ingredient. California Almonds. I could only add 1 picture as I wanted to also show vitamin & minerals. It does contain 100 mg of calcium and I figure with that and fiber it helps regulate my bowels but not like right away. It also helps with muscle, joint and tendon pain and helps my mobility. You can look all of the information up on Amazon.
I eat plant cheese without calcium in it. You can buy it at Walmart or possibly your local grocery store in the cheese section or plant food section. I like the smoked provolone cheese or the shredded cheddar cheese as it curbs my appetite when I'm craving sweets.
There are recipes you can get online to cook with Octonuts. I make my own almond butter with it because the jar version is too bland for me. I had to add stevia to the jar to sweeten it up. That also curbs my appetite on 1 piece of toast.
I put a scoop or two in homemade foods like stir fry or rice casserole that I can add veggies to also.
I mix it with Maxwell House Suisse Mocha Sugar Free and Caffeine Free Coffee. It replaces milk for that creamy flavor. I only add about a tbsp of it. So not much calcium.
Hi @A DiabetesTeam Member, and all you warriors.
As humans we have a gene that allows us to process milk. It normally switches off about age 6-8. Sometimes later. For some people it never switches on. For others it never switches off.
Those of Northern Europeon Stock usually tolerate milk the longest.
Just a public service announcement.
@A DiabetesTeam Member, when much younger I drank milk until I reached teenage years and milk got substituted with softdrinks and/or non-dairy coffee creamer on coffee which I drank both well into my mid-fifties. Then, reality set in, needed to lose weight and change a lot of my diet gradually. I re-introduced milk in my coffee but couldn’t get away from gas and frequent visits to the toilet due to upset/rumbling stomach. Until, I figured I can tolerate 4 teaspoonfuls of milk in coffee and been doing it for the past 3 years. Softdrinks?- just a small mouthful for the whole month, I learned to live with that. Water 3-5 liters per day, easier to do in a tropical environment.
In contrast, my wife ever since can drink pure milk, also drinks coffee with 50% coffee and 50% milk per cup. Haha, tried it myself and off to the toilet ago so I just stick to 4 teaspoonfuls of milk per coffee mug ☕️. Have a great day ahead everybody.
Cheese - eating edam, cheddar, cottage etc. is not an issue for me. Tried several different types of cheeses from different countries, enjoyed them without any issues. Take care
@A DiabetesTeam Member. Yes diabetes is prone to bring on other diseases. Since your pancreas is the affected organ you can get pancreatitis from many different things like alcohol, liver damage, eating red meat because the pancreas can't digest red meat or the kidneys and they regulate your meat products. The pancreas can also cause infections not to heal properly or in a substantial amount of time.
