Members rallied around someone struggling to find a diabetes medication that worked without side effects, with the overwhelming consensus being that insulin itself doesn't cause weight gain but rather eating more carbohydrates than the body needs for daily energy while on insulin leads to fat storage. Several members shared practical strategies including slowly cutting carbs to find personal tolerance levels (ranging from 20 to 150 grams per day), using apps like MyFitnessPal to track intake, testing blood sugar two hours after meals to gauge carb tolerance, and considering SGLT-2 medications like Jardiance or Farxiga as alternatives, though noting these can cause yeast infections in some users. A recurring theme was empowerment through self-advocacy and lifestyle changes, with one member sharing their inspiring journey from an A1C of 13.5 to clinical remission at 4.9 within months through carb reduction, daily walking, and regular exercise, encouraging others to do the hard work and never give up.

It would be advised that you discuss that with your physician and raise it as a concern.

All metformin does is stop the liver from dumping so much glucogen every morning. Do some of the hard work and slowly cut your carbs.

Hi @A DiabetesTeam Member and all you warriors.

Find your carb tolerance. For me, my number at 2 hours is at or below my before eating number, when I eat to my carb tolerance.

I can handle 2-3 net carbs per meal. At this level my 2 hour numbers stay below 7.8(140 usa). I was at double that carb level before long covid, 1.5 years ago.

I have done no prescribed diabetes medications. I do the heavy lifting myself. I cut my carbs. I exercise. I spend time outside. I walk 4-6 miles every day. I do 1000-2000 stairs daily.

I was diagnosed with diabetes in February 2021, A1C 13.5. 3.5 months later my A1C was 4.9. I have been in clinical remission for 3.5 years.

I do our home maintenance and repairs. I serviced our boiler for the winter heating season. I do our car maintenance and repairs. I just did 5 brake jobs on vehicles for us and our family.

Of course I am still just a baby even though I am in my 70s.

My blood glucose number range right now is mostly in the 5.1(92 usa) to 7.5(135 usa) range. Occasionally a little higher or lower.

If your numbers are too high try slowly cutting your carbs.

Never give up, never surrender, never ever.
You got this.
Have a wonderful day.

Insulin has 2 jobs @A DiabetesTeam Member and all you warriors.

1) Process glucose from sugars and carbs for needed daily energy.

2) Store excess glucose from sugars (simple carbs), and from carbs (complex carbs) as
FAT for famine times.

So if you eat more carbs than you need for daily energy
You Will Add Weight.

So eat less carbs than you need for daily energy and you will slowly drop weight.

So in short insulin does not make you gain weight.

Eating more carbs than you need for daily energy while taking insulin will add fat and weight.

Do some of the hard work and slowly cut your carbs.

Have a wonderful day.
Does this explanation help.
