Morning Fasting Numbers
What is an ideal morning fasting number for type II diabetic?
I'm the same way - normally right around 100 but hit the lower 130's every once in a while (cold, flu or allergies sometimes)
And like all the other ranges - 80% of the time in range is usually more than good enough and if you can keep it higher (an occasional over 126 is still putting in range in the high 90% of the time - so over 30 or 40 years you would have a bit of cumulative damage and I kinda don't expect to be around in 30 or 40 years) 😁
Thanks Graham. I am practically always below 126. Once in a great while I will be as high as 130, but extremely rare.
@A DiabetesTeam Member yes, but will have to check my spelling 😁
Sustained blood sugar levels below 70 (whether sleeping/fasting or not) cause two primary vascular conditions:
myocardial ischemia - reduced blood flow to the heart and,
cardiac arrhythmia - abnormal heart beat (generally heart can race which messes up the blood flow and increases the risk of a clot = stroke)
And if low enough (and we all probably have that "don't cross the line number") it can result in a seizure (and brain death in the extreme, but that is generally below 35 or 2.0 mmols)
PS - I have a few notes from some of the studies
The "perfect" FBS range was found to be between 4.5 - 6.09 mmols which is 81 and 110
Below that (below the 4.5/80) resulted in a 130% increase in vascular damage over sustained periods of time
Above 7.0 mmols/126 increased the risk of vascular damage due to "high fasting" numbers by 160%
And both high/low (out of range) FBS also increased death "by all causes" (all cause mortality is their term) significantly as well
Our vascular system likes our sugar levels to stay in that 4.0-7.0 70/72-126 range "most of the time" while fasting and every hour spent outside of that is like a Boxer taking another punch to the chin in a long fight - eventually, a love tap sends them to the mat....
thanks Graham
Ideally for the best vascular/heart protection between 70/72 and 126 (4.0-7.0 mmols)
Non-Diabetic normal would be between 70/72 and 99 (4.0-5.5) but there is no "negative effect" in that (zone) between 100 and 126 (5.5 and 7.0)
Below 70/72 or 4.0 you are putting stress on the heart (heart attack risk)
Above 126 or 7.0 you are causing vascular damage (macro) to increasing your risk of stroke, vascular disease leading to congestive failure and Peripheral Neuropathy
A fasting number "above" 99/5.5 is a "diabetic number" - there is no "pre-diabetic" fasting range - it's either normal or diabetic but as stated as long as it's below 126/7.0 it doesn't appear to have a negative effect - more of just as "state of the union" kinda thing, but not bad unless you go above that threshold
Morning Fasting Numbers 115 To 130. A1c 5.4 Is This Ok
I Would Like To Know If My Reading Is 5.0 Every Morning Does That Mean I'm Controlled Overall?
If My Sugar Count Is Between 5.5 And 6.4 Since October Now Being Feb Does That Mean I Am A Diabetic? I Am 71 And Nobody In My Family Has Be?
