You are asking the wrong question

The real question is "how deadly is Diabetes", more specifically "uncontrolled" Diabetes

That is deadly 100% of the time - the "side effects" of uncontrolled diabetes are:

Heart Failure (kills over 80% of Type 2's long before their time)

Kidney Failure (takes out another 10-15% following a few years of dialysis 3 days a week)

Stroke tends to take out the rest

No uncontrolled Diabetic dies of old age after rocking in the chair for years with the cat at their feet

And before it kills you many have lower extremities amputated, go blind or develop vascular dementia so bad that, thankfully, they don't exactly understand that they are dying

Now that the "real question" has been answered just "how dangerous" does some drug have to be before you would choose "death by uncontrolled diabetes" as the Preferred Alternative

Is there other drugs?

Yes

Metformin is one of the two "naturals" you can use - the other is the Human Recumbent Insulins

But there is a host of others, created in a Lab, with worse side effects - but None of them are as Bad as Death by Diabetes

And you need to remember that you will be taking the meds "to keep you alive and prevent the alternative"

Doing nothing or trying to get by with "herbal supplements" is a path to a very premature, painful debilitating death

After diagnosis there is no "Door Number 3" to choose
