Today A Friend's Daughter Asked Me How Levothyroxin Interacted With Diabetes? I Need To Understand Also
I am on Levothyroxin. I was hypothyroid before my diabetes so I am clueless about how it interacts.
Levothyroxine can elevate your blood sugar numbers but hypothyroidism is "terrible" for causing onset/advancement of Diabetic Complications, so a properly functioning Thyroid is imperative to overall diabetes management
The Thyroid is also responsible for regulating something called our "Basil Metabolic Rate" which is the number of calories we each need just to keep the body running when in a totally relaxed state (such as sleeping) - for most of us in our 50's or 60's our BMR might be in the 1300-1500 calorie range if everything is fine
An imbalance can significantly effect that BMR number which is why thyroid issues can make it more difficult for some to either lose or gain weight - they may need many more or less calories compared to others in order to effect a weight change one way or the other
I ran a couple of queries in the medical study database and found a "review" of a couple hundred studies around using Levothyroxine in patients with diabetes and here is a couple of hilites from the conclusions
Levothyroxine reduces oxidative stress, decreases UAER (had to look that one up - it's something that is measured to determine the level of kidney disease caused by diabetes - so "lower is better"), and provides an overall reno-protective effect in diabetic patients (kidney protection).
Levothyroxine replacement therapy may lower the risk of diabetic nephropathy and CVD development in hypothyroid patients
(so shows Kidney and Heart Protection in Diabetics who are prone to both)
The incidence of CVD was frequent in patients with T2DM with albuminuria and Thyroid disorder
(so while the drug can protect the kidneys, if CKD develops (high blood sugar would be a cause) patients were more likely to develop cardio vascular disease - obviously loss of any heart protection from the Thyroid Med)
So unless the side effects noted by the user are really debilitating it sounds (to me) like one of those drugs that does more Good than Harm if you have Hypothyroidism coupled with Type 2, both of which are based in our Metabolism (or more correctly - the "dysfunction" of our metabolisms that resulted in these metabolic disorders)
**(full article if anyone is interested is called: Systematic Review to Gauge the Effect of Levothyroxine Substitution on Progression of Diabetic Nephropathy in Patients With Hypothyroidism and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus)
I also take a low dose of Levothyroxine . Thyroid and many metabolic diseases go hand in hand

I've been on levothyroxine for years. It has not exacerbated my diabetes at all.
@A DiabetesTeam Member
Your post is very gracious and heartfelt.
Thank you Tony.
Praying for you too 🤗🙏
Hi Everyone I just wanted to say I am praying for everyone and they get well you know God doesn't want any of us sick are to worry because he knows what we all need 🙏
I Am Curious How Many Diabetics Were Misdiagnosed And Have POTs?
How Many Has Been Diagnosed With Hyper, Or Hypothyroidism Since Diabetes Diagnosis?
Who Is All On Your Support Team?
