I've Recently Been Put On One, Evening, Injection Of Humulin Kwikpen. Starting At 8 "clicks" And Am Now At 22!!! Morning Level Is 6 - 9
@A DiabetesTeam Member there is no "normal" amount
You will end up dosing "what you need"
To understand what is happening you can look at a "non-diabetic" who has normal insulin production levels from the pancreas and no insulin resistance
In the course of a day (24 hours) their pancreas will produce and release about 45 units of insulin total
I know that personally my pancreas is only producing about 85% of "normal" - so I'm starting off with about 38 units of "my own insulin"
If you are only functioning at 50% then you would only be producing 22 units
If we both had the "same exact needs" then (simply) all else being equal You would need 16 more unit then I would just to be even
And that's without even factoring Insulin Resistance
If you had high resistance that may mean you would need "double" the normal (non-diabetic) insulin dose just to get the same effect - so minimally 45 "extra units"
Each individual diabetic that uses insulin will use different amounts based on "their" physiology
I am aware of individuals that use 2 or 3 units and others that use 100 in the same period of time
Your number of units is "what you need" and there is no comparison to anyone else - it's personally tailored
A Non Diabetic would produce about 13 units of Basil Insulin a day - you are injecting 22 units - almost twice as much as someone with no deficits
That tends to indicate your own production is low and your resistance is high
If the Doc is still looking (trial and error) for your "static" dose that can take a bit of "try this, make sure you don't go too low but if still too high, add a bit more"
That will get to a baseline dose
This is a Basil Insulin so once figured out it "should" stay fairly stable unless your production or deficiency levels change
If you were (or end up) taking a mealtime insulin (Bolus) those are doses you will more likely Dynamically adjust, if you go that route, where you will figure a Carb to Insulin ratio and adjust accordingly
The long acting and very long acting Insulins work on (hepatic and not dietary sugars) and those sugars tend to be more stable/consistent and once the (units) are figured out they tend to remain static for long periods of time
It sounds like your doctor is adjusting your Humulin KwikPen dosage to help manage your blood glucose levels effectively. A morning level of 6-9 mmol/L is within a reasonable range for many people with diabetes, but always confirm with your healthcare provider if this is your target range. Thanks for reply. Thinking jumping in too quick. I need to know my needs will vary, slightly, from day to day. I have a good diet but haven't started tweaking it yet
Is 22 a normal amount? It is more painful thr more I use
On Day 2 Of Slow Release Insulin. 8 " Clicks" Taken In The Evening. Question Is How Long Before My Morning Blood Level Comes Down.
