Also depends on how far down your A1C has come. If you started at 14 or so, and are now down to 10, he may realize that you need more help in bringiing it down to under 7. So it is hard to comment on what his idea was in raisin the mg of metformin.

I agree. You need to speak with your dr or your diabetes nurse at your next visit. How are your sugars during the day? Are they all over the place or are they stable. You don't want your sugars bouncing up and down.

I started with 1000 mg of metformin 3 times a day along with glipizide and now my metformin is 2 times a day and I now take 10 units of insulin 2 times a day. and my blood sugar is running between 130 and 160 where my dr. wants it and my A1C is down to 7.3 from 7.5 in about a months time. Should you have to go on insulin it might not be for good, it can be just until your A1C and blood sugar numbers are where the dr. wants them.

Some Dr's start with low doses to check tolerance. Mine started with 1000mg 2x daily. I was so sick I couldn't take it. He then gave me 500 mg extended release once daily. Much better than the original.
