Are Side Effects Because Of The Meds Itself Or Because Of Having Diabetes?

A DiabetesTeam Member asked a question 💭
Florence, KY

Let's assume, I have Farxiga and I get a side effect from the drug. Is it because of the drug or because I can't control my diabetes or both?

Side effects can arise from both diabetes itself and the medications used to treat it. Here are some details:

Side Effects from Diabetes Medications:
- Upset stomach and hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) are common side effects of some diabetes medications.
- Fatigue can be caused by medications like statins, beta-blockers, and diuretics.
- Statins: May raise blood sugar levels, contributing to fatigue.
- Beta-blockers: Slow down the central nervous system, causing tiredness.
- Diuretics: Can interfere with salt balance, leading to extreme fatigue.

Side Effects from Diabetes:
- Fatigue: Can be due to chronic inflammation, depression, anxiety, or mild dehydration from hyperglycemia.
- Hypoglycemia: Symptoms include sweating, lightheadedness, shakiness, pale skin, headache, hunger, fast heartbeat, and irritability.

Managing Side Effects:
- Medication Timing: Taking medications at specific times of the day can help manage side effects.
- Consulting Healthcare Providers: If side effects are bothersome, discussing alternative medications or treatment strategies with a doctor is recommended.

Additional Considerations:
- Lifestyle Changes: Losing weight, eating healthier, and getting more exercise can significantly impact diabetes management and potentially reduce side effects.

If you didn't have the problem before you stated Farxiga, then I would say it's the drug. Currently trying to get my body used to Synjardy. It doesn't help that I have gastritis.
