If You Find Your Blood Sugar Is High During The Day, What Do You Do To Help Bring It Down?

For me, @A DiabetesTeam Member, it is 3 fold. 1st eat a meal with 1 serving, 15 carbs, if it has been about 3-5 since you have eaten. When you fast more than 4 hours your liver starts dumping some glucogen to provide energy.

I increase my exercise (Length and intensity), increase my immediate water intake (I'm already doing 150-250 ounces of water a day), eat 5 carbs of blueberries, blackberries, raspberries - or 5 carbs of something else.

I check 2 hours later and always see a 10-20 (0.6-1.1) drop after the first 5 carbs even with no exercise. When I repeat the 5 carbs, I only see half the drop with the 2nd round.

With exercise alone, I usually see a 15-20 (0.8-1.1) drop 30 minutes after I am done.

With water alone, if you are partially dehydrated could be significant. If not dehydrated, like me, the drop is <5(0.3).

Try cutting your carbs to 2-3 servings per day. A serving is 15 carbs. Carbs are sugars and carbs. Fruits are carbs too. Eat only high fiber, whole carbs. Stay away from fruit juices.

Baby steps. I can do baby steps and you can too.

If you are continually higher than 140, talk with your doctor and ask for help getting lower numbers.

Never give up, never surrender, never ever.
You got this.
Have a blessed day.

If it has been at least 4 hours since I last had a meal I "eat" to get the pancreas to release insulin (eating triggers that)

If it hasn't been long enough to eat again then you can guzzle a couple glasses/bottles of water - we are told to drink water as diabetics because it gets into the blood stream and "dilutes" the sugar concentration.

If you are sitting around and it's high - get active - do some exercise even if it's just going for a walk.

We burn sugar when we move. We burn more if we "move more".

Sugar is stored in the muscles to fuel movement - burn some of that up with activity and the body will try and replace it (likes to keep the "sugar tank" in the muscles FULL) so will (suck) sugar out of the blood stream to achieve that.

But if it's a "chronic issue" in that it is constantly high during the day despite what you are doing then Talk to your Doc. It's time to add some meds to deal with the problem - because chronic high sugar during the day IS a problem that needs to be managed.

Drink a lot of water and that helps to bring the high blood sugar down. Try to do something physical like walking and try not to give in for the urge to go to sleep.

If I find blood glucose is too high during the day I inject short-acting Humalog insulin as required. Will check glucose via meter circa two to four hours later.
