If You Are A Walker, Where Do You Walk And Do You Get Bored?

A DiabetesTeam Member asked a question 💭

The "squeeky wheel" (me) is back, with yet another (new) complaint! Snork! I read that walking is the greatest thing to do and I keep trying it, but it just seems boring seeing the same things over and over in my neighborhood. I live in a blue-collar suburb, where thankfully not much happens, but there is just not much new to see either. And in the winter people are inside their homes. I owned one dog in my lifetime and walked him several times a day-now that had a purpose! For years after he… read more

I generally have two places I frequent which in all honesty are both working for me. The first, is a local walking track which the town provides, it is a quarter mile around and, that makes it easier for me because, I don't have to activate my step tracker. I do 8 times around & my two miles are done. The second is an indoor shopping mall which is a little bit farther to travel but, I don't mind. When the weather is too cold or, too hot, this is where I go. I don't mind because it challenges my will power. There are several food places and, it takes all the strength one can muster to not stop and eat. This place requires the step tracker. I get bored but, it is necessary to help with my numbers. I refuse to go back to insulin and I want to get off the Metformin too. It is always a struggle. We shall see. Hope this helps. Peace out.

Today, Sunday afternoon I went for a walk in the community although it was raining but I'm committed to exercise daily. Rather it's dancing, vacuuming, cleaning my house or in the community, helping seniors cross the street safely, running and engaging with my students, planting a garden, throwing a ball around, jumping rope, hoping/skipping, 20 squats 3 times a day, work out video Free on YouTube, swimming, shopping: sometimes just looking and saving money. Just keep moving 20-30 minutes 3 times daily. Do what you can but it has to be consistently of some exercise which will make you feel better.

Try taking a purposeful walk. Count the red doors, how many triangles you see, unusual objects, anything that is a focus. Even the same old neighborhood walks take on a sense of mystery when you are looking for a specific thing. You must choose the object before you leave your front door.

Becky - great question. I sometimes drive to other neighborhoods or cities to walk. Sometimes I walk from store to store and across parking lots and in otherwise “boring” places just to get steps in. The relative slowness of walking allows me to see all sorts of interesting details that I would otherwise miss! I really enjoy areas with nice gardens and/or outdoor art pieces, etc. I think it’s good to be as creative and varied as you can be.
