How Do You Stay On Track While Traveling?
We are leaving very early Saturday morning with my parents to go to Indiana to visit my brother, sister-in-law and nieces for Easter. I know we will be eating out and maybe at the hotel or at fast food places. We're planning to stay a week as my mom has a break from work as she works at an elementary school and it just happened to coincide with my nieces' spring break.
Hi @A DiabetesTeam Member,
Since I avoid all carbs, it's easy to identify what I shouldn't eat.
Avoid Panera Bread. The menu items start at about 30 carbs and go to over 100 carbs. Even the salads and soups. Definitely not diabetes friendly.
I've even eaten at many bakeries throughout Europe. Just throw away the bread from the sandwich.
In the Outer Banks, my Bride wanted to eat dinner at the iconic bakery and premier homemade ice cream shop. They had off menu items of hot dogs, hamburgers, and fries.
I smelled the hot dog and fries, that a staff member was eating. I asked if I could get some meat. They told me I could have a hamburger and fries, but they would have to charge me for 2 double scoop cones. I said done.
Tonight my Bride wanted to eat at Italian pasta and pizza place. I had a bit of greens and root crop and raw beef slices. After a bit of creative menu sampling. It was a bit of negotiation since I speak neither Italian or French. But some reason, I can read about 70% of both.
A good skill to be blessed with.
All of the major chain restaurants have "nutritional information" available on their websites so you can see the calories/carbs in all of their offerings - you can pick the ones that are most "friendly to you"
Even the fast food places have things you can eat - just don't take a diet holiday because you are away from home
With the other places you should already "know" what you should and shouldn't eat
Ok, there may be an ingredient here or there that you are not aware of but White Potato at a diner is the same as at home and you know you should avoid it or stick to taste
Fill up on the fats and proteins and if it looks like something you would Love to Eat, you "know" you probably shouldn't 😁
Easter Dinner will be up at most gatherings - eat the Turkey or Ham - load up, eat the green veggies, the salad, lower GL veggies like carrots, turnip, rutabaga (if there). The Gravy is fine unless it's loaded with Flour to bulk it up.
Leave the bread and rolls alone and get a "taste" of the dessert offerings
WE KNOW what we shouldn't eat - don't make travel an excuse to stuff the things in your mouth
Possible reasons why some People cannot sleep
It's estimated that one in two people with type 2
diabetes have sleep problems due to unstable blood sugar levels and accompanying diabetes-related symptoms, High blood sugar (hyperglycemia) and low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) during the night can lead to insomnia and next-day fatigue.
Don't forget all your supplies and medicine that you will need.😉
