Do We NEED To Take Supplements And Is There Actually Any Value?

A DiabetesTeam Member asked a question 💭
Inverary, ON

The subject and question comes up - is there value in taking a supplement?

The answer is that Most of US probably don't get the vitamins, minerals and elements we NEED because all of us eat diets that range from downright Crappy up to Inadequate at best and about 50% in particular have eating habits are squarely in the CRAP realm

Too much saturated fat, too many carbs, way too much sodium, lacking nutrients - we have bought into the "You are too busy to prepare for yourself so just pop this in… read more

No they don't @A DiabetesTeam Member

All a company has to do is show that the product is "likely safe"

The FDA or Health Canada (or whomever regulates in your home country) doesn't need to see results, simply that the product didn't kill anyone - it doesn't have to show any benefit to get a G.R.A.S. (Generally Regarded As Safe) rating and with that they can sell the supplement or food additive or artificial sweetener or whatever they are selling that you will (consume)

They aren't "drugs" they don't "treat" so they aren't "regulated". The Orgs only step in when Wild Claims (Lies) are made (Gluco-Pro which changes it's name and address every couple of months has been ordered Many Times by the FDA to stop LYING about the benefits of their product and stop making curing/treatment claims) but move/change a name or letter in the name and carry on

And then you will also see FDA "cleared" which simply means they have submitted paperwork to show that their product is not "significantly different" from some other product that is either Approved or given a GRAS rating and they don't have to even supply information to really support that beyond the (formula)

The bottom line is, unless something is a Prescription Drug from a known/established maker you could be getting anything from a Placebo, to Snake Oil to something that might actually be beneficial

Very good comment and advice Graham.
I also think the first prize is to eat healthy and as balanced as possible.
Pills cannot replace this and if it does it has all kinds of unknown consequences.
Thanks for the post!

I'm not Vegan. I do take Vitamin D,as my digestive system does not absorb it from food for some reason. I take B12 shots also. My provider does a complete blood work up every 3 months, just to make sure I'm not getting to much. To much Vitamin D can cause brittle bones, and kidney stones, among other things. I do try to eat a well balanced diet. No more happy meals, and milk shakes for me. Just wished I had ate better before my diabetes diagnosis.

Hi Graham🖐
Do you suppose many people understand how bogus many of these non-regulated suppliments are?
Be sure to look up GENUINE reviews of these products and not phony ones written by the makers...
