Has Anyone Seen The Headline "Ozempic Linked With A Blinding Eye Condition"??

A DiabetesTeam Member asked a question 💭

If anyone is taking a GLP-1 class drug which includes Ozempic, Rybelsus, Mounjaro or some of the older ones like Victoza this headline may sound a little scary

It is based on a study done at Harvard Med and just published in the Journal of American Medicine (JAMA) so that means to start, this is not just a headline from someone sitting in a basement wearing a tinfoil hat - it's a "reliable source"

But what the headlines are not going to say is how they came about that statement

Here's what… read more

And Sorry, I left out a key piece of information here from their study

There was 629 cases of this disease over a 6 year period

Of those 629 cases

17 were taking Semaglutide for Diabetes
20 were taking Semaglutide for Obesity Management

and the other 592 people diagnosed had never taken the drug

Just for a little more perspective

That bit of research they did was important - good on the Docs in Boston that took a look a this

But it's the webpages that will sensationalize this and try to cause a panic because they know everybody and their dog is trying to use Ozempic for weight loss - its big news - it will get them "clicks" and their advertisers will pay off

But it just has the ability to cause "panic" amongst some Diabetic users who "need the stuff to stay alive" and become more worried about what is saving their lives because it may have a side effect - massively blown out of proportion

Yes, 4 times the risk - sound like a lot and it is

But with something so rare you have to keep perspective

The odds of dying in a vehicle crash are 1 in every 93 people - are you going to walk everywhere for the rest of your life???

In which case you become 1 in every 485 people who die by getting hit as a pedestrian

And yes, this drug "may" cause the disorder in 1 out of every 25,000 Ozempic users - of course the other 24,999 will be just fine. And now, the ophthalmologist's will be aware of this rare disorder and probably start screening their Diabetic patents for it as a part of the annual diabetes eye check now - probably never did before for such a rare disorder

That's my take on it

I haven't seen or heard any headlines that you've mentioned. Thank goodness, you have the common sense and ability to research all the gobble gook and translate it. You're a jewel!

I was put on it when we had to change insurances for three months and once we were able to get on an insurance that covered my Byetta I hit the breaks. Ozempic is too scary too me and I have seen too many bad things happen.
