For a person with diabetes, choosing the right type of rice is important to help manage blood glucose levels. Here are some options based on my knowledge base:

- Whole Grain Rice: Brown rice is a better option than white rice because it has more fiber, which helps control blood sugar levels
- Low-Glycemic Index Rice: Show Full Answer

For a person with diabetes, choosing the right type of rice is important to help manage blood glucose levels. Here are some options based on my knowledge base:

- Whole Grain Rice: Brown rice is a better option than white rice because it has more fiber, which helps control blood sugar levels.
- Low-Glycemic Index Rice: Basmati rice has a lower glycemic index compared to other types of rice, which means it has a slower impact on blood glucose levels.
- Portion Control: Regardless of the type of rice, it's important to eat it in moderation and balance it with other nutrients.

Always consult with a dietitian to tailor your diet to your specific needs and goals.

@A DiabetesTeam Member there is other choices - that AI generated answer is technically correct but as diabetics we can use portion size control

It's the "starch" in rice that contains the carbs that jack our blood sugar

So as an example, lets say I'm having Chicken (protein/fat - no carbs) and Rice (potentially lots of carbs)

And I want to keep my "carbs in the meal" at less than 35 carbs

I have "rice choices"

1 Cup of White Rice contains 45 carbs so "over my limit" but instead I could reduce that to 3/4 Cup (34 carbs) and just squeak it in IF I Eat No Other Carbs at all with the meal

OR

1 Cup of Brown Rice contains 40 carbs - so still not "35 safe" but 3/4 Cup of Brown (30 carbs) would leave room to add a 1/2 cup of Carrots (4 carbs) to the meal - so same amount as white rice Plus carrots = 34 carbs - same as only 3/4 cup of White Rice

I get a blend of Wild/Brown Rice that comes in at 22 Carbs per cup, so I could have a cup and a half (33 carbs) OR stick at a cup and add a "few other carbs" to the meal (slice of low carb bread, more carrots or turnip or beans or something) and still stay under my "35 carbs per meal"

So it's more about portion size and choices - if you love white rice you can eat it. You just have to eat a whole lot less then you might like - want to eat "more rice", go with brown or wild - check the packages - they all list a "portion size and number of carbs" on the nutrition label and stick with the portion size (or fraction of) to keep your blood sugar levels happy
