A DiabetesTeam Member asked a question 💭

New Year's is racing at us and some/many will be making a few resolutions and if most of us had have followed those resolutions that we always broke -

You know the "I'm going to eat better, get some exercise and lose weight" resolution that was forgotten while eating Valentines Chocolates 😁

But what does that have to do with the 3 most prescribed medications that help keep the drug companies reporting earnings in the Billions?

Well the top three drugs treat conditions that ALL could have… read more

Most herbals have a slight effect. For those that can't tolerate the prescriptions, a herbal or a supplement might have just enough effect to help a bit.

Not a good replacement for most prescriptions, but maybe just enough for some.

Knock on wood I am not on any medications mentioned. The Dr would like me to take a statin but at this point I said no, blood pressure meds well that has been a nightmare, I’ve reacted to every single one I’ve taken, so they’ve stopped trying. I take hawthorn berry instead. No metformin yet and hope to for as long as I control what I eat, some people think I’m a bit excessive with my eating habits but I’d rather be that way than suffer the complications of diabetes. In reality I really don’t miss my old way of eating that much. Occasionally yes but not enough for me to stray.

I'm almost 4 years in clinical remission. When I can no longer control my numbers, I have already made the decision to opt for insulins.

Although I might give a GLP-1 agonist a shot. We will see when help becomes necessary.

Have a good night.

@A DiabetesTeam Member Do you think that many diabetics use anti diabetic drugs as a crutch, a way to avoid changing their lifestyle and eating habits?

My aim is to come off Gliclazide and Metformin or at least half the dosages. I already only take half the Metformin dose and not every day. I don’t find it very effective in any case (unlike Gliclazide) and it doesn’t always agree with me. In order to come off these meds it will take a lot of effort but I think it’s worth it. Here I get the meds free, really free in my case as I’m retired so don’t pay any National Health premium.

I agree with you re: Big Pharma. In order to put a drug on the market they have to invest eye watering amounts of money and there is high risk that the med may be rejected or not work. Add to that after a fixed period of time the drug by law has to become generic (lose its copyright) so revenue is cut further.

I can relate to your story I too have a strong Maternal and Paternal history of both Type 1 and 2 diabetes. I gained 44 1bs over a stressful 11 year period during which I had multiple signs and symptoms of diabetes. After seeing 26 specialists, I was finally diagnosed with T2D in August 2001, Like you, I'm now skinny. I've always exercised daily and this hasn't changed. I still require metformin, Jardiance and ramipril. I look longingly at my inactive, overweight friends who don't have the burden of diabetes but then I'm grateful that at age 71, nature and nurture have not blessed me with other health issues. 🙏
