Is There Any Other Method Or App To Use To Take Your Sugar Readings Besides The Libre Sensor Or Finger Prick. Libre Sensor Too Expensive.
Continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) like the Libre Sensor are convenient but can be costly. Alternatives include traditional finger-stick testing, which is more affordable, or apps like BlueStar, which sync with glucose meters to provide real-time coaching and advice. Thank you for your response. Ive also use the Libre2 sensor. I am quite impressed. I will find out from my medical aid. They do cover also 80% but need a prescription from my doctor. I will definitely look into it this year.
Yes, the sensors are expensive
I wear the Libre2 and it comes in at about $630 (CDN$) for 3 months worth (12 weeks) but I'm fortunate that my insurance picks up 85% so runs me about 20 bucks a sensor
The Dexcom system is similar in price but at least in Canada it is only (approved) for Type 1 use so my insurance won't cover it
There is a new sensor, at least available in the US (name escapes me at the moment) that comes in at about 50% of the other systems - believe I have seen it advertised for $80 for 2 (4 weeks worth) and can be obtained without a prescription
The prices will come down, in the grand scheme the CGM's are still a fairly new Technology, but I believe they will ultimately be the (tracking tool) that comes into wide use
The Libre 2, even if I just let it do it's job with no intervention from me, takes the equivalent of 1440 "stick tests per day" giving you instant feedback on what you are doing, how what you stick in your mouth effects you - allows you to react quickly to a blood sugar trend and prevent damage to yourself
And I guess my insurance looks at it like this - if they can spend 200 bucks a month on sensors that keep me off $1000/month Ozempic or Mounjaro then it's worth it for them
For me, helping me manage, at least for now, not having to use the meds will keep me alive longer with good function, is worth it for me
thank you Graham for your valuable input. Libre sensor works perfect but becomes too expensive. I will have a look at Dexcom what the cost is. Think these monitors should become more affordable :-)
No, unfortunately at the moment the methods that you can use to accurately measure your blood sugar are limited to:
The Stick Test - a Self Monitor Blood Glucose Meter with test strips
A Continuous Glucose Monitor like Libre or Dexcom
There is an implantable option available in some areas - but that is a minor operation to insert a pellet (like the chip they put in pets) that lasts for upwards of 6 months but has to be "cut out and another implanted - not popular at all and very expensive
There is nothing else at the moment that is not at least minimally invasive - the watches you see advertised are just a "wish" at this time - they are nowhere near advanced enough
