Abnormal But Expected?
i am on 500mg metformin twice a day, and have recently just had my bloods done and got the results and i was informed that my HbA1c was abnormal but expected, does anyone have any idea what this means. in january it was 48 but it is now 54, i have an appointment to see my GP on the 23rd.
Strangely metformin made my hba1 higher ,it does not agree with me and now on glipizide no bad side effects
i had it done in January and it was 48, as it was the time before this. i see my gp next week so i will find out then. thank for your answer, it was quite useful
@A DiabetesTeam Member I am assuming you are asking about the UK a1c numbers which are in mmol/L, if so 54 would be "abnormal" because it is above the "normal" range which tops out at 42. 54 is in the "diabetic" range:

As for "expected", there are a lot of reasons your Dr could expect a certain number. Are you doing daily testing, and did you show the results to the Dr? If so, he could be expecting an a1c number based on your daily test results. Your Dr may also be expecting a number based on how you are describing your diet or the medications you are on (including non-diabetes medicine) . Why your Dr was expecting a certain number can really only be answered by your Dr..
