What Can I Do About High Fasting Blood Sugars?

A DiabetesTeam Member asked a question 💭

I'm on 2000 mg. Metformin per day, 120 mg. Gliclazide a day, and now my doctor has put me on Victoza. I started with .6 mg. a day for a week and then 1.2 mg. for the second week. My fasting blood sugars are still about 7.3. We're trying to get them below 7.0. For two days they were slightly below that but then this morning back to 7.3. The doctor said that if they're still above 7 after the second week to increase the dosage to 1.8. Because of the side effects that you can get from Victoza, eg… read more

I spoke to my pharmacist yesterday about the concerns I have about possible side effects of victoza. My main concern was the possible development of thyroid tumours or pancreatitis. She looked up the statistics on those side effects and less than 1% of those people on it have had either of those issues, even if pancreatitis runs in your family. She asked me how my readings have been since I've been on it and I told her they were always under 7.0. After much discussion I made the decision to stay on it. The risks of the side effects I was concerned about were outweighed by the results I was achieving. The pharmacist did tell me to pay attention to my body and if I experience any pains in my stomach that don't go away, or swelling in my neck glands, that I should see my doctor immediately. Fortunately I'm not experiencing the mood altering issues that others have experienced.

You are RIGHT to be concerned about taking Victoza....this drug is dangerous and there are thousands of reports to the US Food and Drug Administration about it.....the most insidious side effect of this drug is its ability to disrupt your mood, the executive functions of your brain and plunge you into a chemical depression that can border on the psychotic.....I'm NOT KIDDING.....this happened to ME.....I went off the drug...and in 2 weeks I was back to normal...and happy.....these side effects seem to affect women more than men. Regardless......if you are going to continue to take this drug, make sure you supplement with heavy doses of a broad spectrum of B vitamins.....the methylated kind......Methyl B-12, Methyl Folate, etc.....PLEASE ask your loved ones to be aware of your moods.....I almost lost my husband over this G** D*M**D drug!!!

Also remember Stress and Illness can and will effect glucose control as much as what you choose to eat over the course of the day and how you manage your day to day mental stresses that are part of everyones life. Finding time to just relax and have ME time is very important for your own mental health and for your body just as it is to be eating the right foods to fuel ones body.

I increased my Victoza to 1.8 mg. three days ago. My readings have been 6.4-6.7 ever since, both fasting and after meals. That's perfect, I think. I'm still concerned about the possible side effects of the Victoza. Is anyone else on Victoza who has the same concerns?
