What About Night Time Snacks?

A DiabetesTeam Member asked a question 💭

That is a recurring question - what I can eat before bed to at least keep my blood sugar stable?

Well just today I got a newsletter from the Diabetes Care Community and one of the articles dealt with that exact question so I'll paraphrase and post up their "7 Bedtime Snacks for Keeping Blood Sugar Stable Overnight"

Keep in mind this not to "lower" your blood sugar, just stop it from jacking up overnight - medication or insulin is the only thing effective at "lowering" your blood sugar while… read more

My goto snacks often have protein or fats to keep me satisfied.

7-10 nuts, or
1-2 pieces of biltong or jerky or pemmican, or
1 avocado, or
Small piece of my dinner meat.

When I'm really craving sweets -
6 blueberries, and
3 raspberries, and 2 blackberries with whipped cream.

Half a small apple or pear.
A small mandarin orange.

The fruit is an occasional thing,
My goto is the nuts or avocado.

Night time snacking is a major problem for me. Lately dinner has been late so not to much of an issue but the earlier I eat the more I want to snack, not because I’m hungry I just feel the urge to munch. Popcorn is one thing I do like and I measure out 3 c and that’s perfect serving to satisfy. I’ll admit I do drizzle a bit of butter. What I tend to crave the most is crunchy and salty snacks which there really isn’t a lot out there. I steer clear of crackers and no chips unless it’s the quest cheese crackers in an individual package at 10 carbs, with a net carb of 5, or quest chips or Hilo chips which are individual packages net carb of 4 for quest and 3 for Hilo. Hummus I can do and I like veggies. I’ll need to keep them ready to go for munching. I guess I’ve avoided apples because of the high sugar content. I stick with berries mostly with an occasional kiwi or clementine. I miss my fruit that’s for sure. Nuts I always have but can’t have peanuts because it’s like they call to me to come eat them. Cheese and beef sticks are another go to. I do like my sweets and smart cakes are great for satisfying that just a tad pricey. Plus you have to order online. Good info Graham, thanks for sharing.

My hunt for salsa/chips has led to no salt corn chips from Xochitl. One ounce has 18 grams of carbs but zero salt. I am balancing my need to lower my sodium intake along with carbs. Otherwise. my regulars remain 1/2 green apple with almond butter, air popped corn, sliced zucchini with humus or greek yogurt with walnuts and a tsp of maple syrup occasionally and sometimes resort to cucumber spears.

Speaking of snacking I was using the mission zero net carb street taco size tomato basil flavor and crisping them up to dip in salsa and thought I set my air fryer oven at 250 but it was at 450 and wow they got crisp😂😂😂😂 Smokey and black too. Now the whole house smells like burnt food. We’ll trying that again if I can just get the smell out of the house😜 I’ll get my chips and salsa yet!!

Thanks for the info Graham. I usually snack with apple or pear or any fruit I have or peanuts - my weakness- don't really like other nuts. My evening meal is early usually 6pm, I'm also watching my weight. Good night everyone 😘
