Type 2 Diabetic. Question About Blood Sugar: Where Is It Supposed To Be? I Understand That Lower Is Better, But What Is The Goal?

And PS - Lower isn't always better

You don't want to spend much time down below 4.0 mmols/70, that drastically increases your risk of heart attack and stroke and at it's extreme, below 2.0 mmols/35'ish you can go into a coma and experience Brain Death

Also, lower blood sugar means "less available energy"

Might be a good thing while you are sleeping but during the day when you are trying to function physically (you) could be limiting your energy levels if your blood sugar is consistently much below about 6 mmols/110'ish

Henry has pointed out the "maximum" levels. Your (personal) lower level may be different than most depending on your needs

And something we need to remember

A Normal blood sugar range is 4.0 - 7.8 mmols or 72 - 140

If your blood sugar is Anywhere in "that Normal range" it is no more or less healthy whether your run all day at the lower "or" upper end of that range or anywhere in between

There is the CDC guidelines. Up to 180.
There is the ADA guideline. Up to 180.
Diabetes UK guideline. Up to 151.

Then there is the nondiabetic range of 72 to 140.
If you control both your before eating numbers and your 2 hour numbers to this range,

You will arrest cumulative vascular damage right where it is now. You will not add to diabetes complications and comorbidities. You will live your best life with diabetes.

DiabetesTeam gave you some great info. After you first bite check 2 hours after a meal, if still spiked you will need to let your Health Care provider know. I usually take my machine to my check ups, or keep a log of what you ate when you ate, and your reading. This will help your Dr. make better decisions in your treatment plan. Best of luck
