Is There A Specific Time To Take Milk Thistle And Is There Any Known Interractions With Other Medications Or Vitamins For Me To Be Aware Of?

I tend to take my Milk Thistle and Daily Probiotic with supper which puts both about 10 or 12 hours after my "morning meds" which are Atorvastatin (Lipitor) for cholesterol and Perindopril - an ACE Inhibitor taken for BP

When I was doing all my reading on the stuff before I started it (it's been somewhat over 5 years now for sure since I started) the only real concern/possible interaction that I could find was for Diabetics taking Metformin

They both have a similar method of action on the liver and the could mess with each other or possibly even super charge the Metformin effect leading to a low blood sugar condition which is almost never, ever seen in metformin users that don't take other anti-diabetic drugs

Also, as long as you stick to the (preparations/formula's) that can be sourced from Major Vitamin Companies you will not only never get a therapeutic dose of any vitamin/mineral/supplement (if one even exists) and any recommended dosage on the bottle (which is FDA or Health Canada or whomever your regulator is) is well within the "safe to take" for all but that I in a million people who would have a dangerous reaction

They are just supplements

Yes, some can mess with other drugs so go to a trusted source for a list of drug interactions (like WebMD or Mayo Clinic) for information

I would NEVER ask my Doctor about a supplement - they have NO CLUE - a Pharmacist might be a better source or a dietitian if you use one you trust

No @A DiabetesTeam Member I cant.would suggest that you don't take it at same time as cholesterol meds ,but otherwise should be fine.Give it a go,watch for any untoward changes.
In theory milk thistle may decrease the effect of your cholesterol drug or you BP drug, but may decrease cholesterol and BP itself. I wouldn't consult doc first but if concerned obvious talk to pharmacist (prob more knowledgeable and accessible)

Hi @A DiabetesTeam Member.AI is useless.here's what I know -may put your mind at rest
Milk thistle can be taken at any time of day,but recommendation is 15 mins before meals for best absorption.Taking it before breakfast helps your liver cells to absorb quickly so you get full benefit throughout the day,
If taken after a heavy meal or with other supplements it may help digestion.
No known interaction between milk thistle and vitamins.
Don't take with
Allergy drugs
Cholesterol drugs
Anti anxiety drugs
Blood thinners
Some cancer drugs
Drugs broken down by the liver
Its only necessary to consult doc if any of the above affect you
