What everyone should avoid

Highly Processed foods - any "crap" that you just stick in the microwave - ready to eat full meals

More specifically anything with "added sugar" - pop/soda, juice, cereals like Frosted Flakes (unless your name is Tony and you have stripes 😁) - no sugar in coffee, no "sweet tea"

White Starches are your worst enemy and this is the tough one because it's probably the "most eaten foods" in the western diet

So yes - White Bread/Rolls/Hotdog or Hamburg Buns, Pizza dough, White Potato, White Rice, anything "baked" made of flour like donuts and pastries

Essentially if it was a major part of our diets, because we are just way too busy to prepare our meals from scratch, it's off limits now.

Hi @A DiabetesTeam Member,
I'm a recovering Japanese rice-aholic. I've been eating 2-3 net carbs per meal for 3.7 years, occasionally up to 5 carbs. It's not easy. It's very, very, very hard.

But it's necessary so that I can be active, and be here for my family.

Both my parents passed within 10 years of being diagnosed with diabetes. That was 30 years ago. I am the oldest of 8 children.

All my siblings were diagnosed with diabetes more than 10-20 years ago. 3 are gone. I want to enjoy travel with my Bride. I enjoy time with our children, grands, great grands.

I couldn't do that for very long if I don't control my diabetes journey. I control my numbers to the nondiabetic range of 4.0(72 usa) to 7.8(140 usa).

I find that my carb limit is 2-3 net carbs per meal. Or my 2 hour number will be higher than 7.8(140 usa).

If you can control your numbers to less than 7.8(140 usa) - then you can arrest the cumulative vascular damage that feeds diabetes complications and comorbidities.

There is nothing I could do before being diagnosed with diabetes that I can't do now. I continue to do the things I did before being diagnosed.

Although I am measured in what I do. I take cues from my body, and I actually listen and slow down or rest when needed.

As a man that's the hardest thing for me to do. The say boys don't grow up, they just get older. That's true. I still want to do the things I did in my 20s. It just takes longer to recover.

But listen to your body and do what it tells you to do.

Good luck.

Baby steps. 1 baby step at a time.
Have a wonderful day.
