Has Anyone Experienced Hyperglycemia Due Fasting/keto Diet?

A DiabetesTeam Member asked a question πŸ’
Pretoria, ZA

I've tried the intermittent fasting to lose some weight by only having one meal a day (high protein, fat and fibre) and using MCT oil in coffee to suppress hunger. However my sugar shot up to 16 mmol/L (A1c) and there was level 3 ketone in my urine sample. I tested negative for ketoacidosis. Is this advisable or can be a trigger for ketoacidosis at a later stage?

Your experience of hyperglycemia and high ketone levels while following a fasting/keto diet could potentially increase the risk of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), especially if insulin levels are too low. DKA occurs when the body breaks down fat for energy, producing ketones that can accumulate dangerously. While you tested negative for DKA, the presence of level 3 ketones is concerning. It's advisable to consult your doctor to adjust your diet or treatment plan to prevent future risks.

Any intermittent fasting should be closely monitored by a doctor. In less than 2 days I go into ketosis, burning fat.

My Bride does not like the ketone breath, so I have a serving of fruit. Out of ketosis.

Thank you! Yes, I'll be setting up an appointment with the doctor and dietician to work through this in Jan.
