To determine the amount of magnesium needed, it's best to consult with your doctor. They can check your magnesium levels through blood and urine tests. Here are some key points:

- Diagnosis: Blood tests can show low magnesium levels, but since less than 1% of magnesium is in the blood, levels can appear normal even if deficient. A 24-hour urine test after a magnesium injection can better assess levels.
- Diet: Increasing intake of magnesium-rich foods (like nuts and beans) is a safe way to boost levels.
- Supplements: Discuss with your doctor before taking magnesium supplements, especially if you have kidney issues.

If you are not on ACE Inhibitors a class of Blood Pressure Meds then you may want to try a potassium supplement which helps with cramps (also great for the kidneys)

@A DiabetesTeam Member the only study I have read where it was used as a supplement for diabetics to (help) with blood sugar regulation dosed at 250 mg/day with magnesium gluconate (there is about a half dozen magnesium supplements out there so have to read the label to see what "kind" is in the bottle

But as always, your levels can be tested in a routine blood test (same time/same blood as an A1C test for example) - an RBC test or Serum Magnesium test will show magnesium deficiency which may require a higher supplement rate, so do ask your Doc next time you are having blood work done to add the test
