What Challenges Have You Overcame Since Being Diagnosed With Diabetes?
I learned we are what we eat, and I overcame eating unhealthy foods. Lost 60 pounds, got my A1C from a 14 down to a 6.5.
I love the honesty displayed here. Many of us have slipped into denial and ignored our diagnoses! But the beast grows stronger when we do!

I was rebellious at one point, stopped doing finger sticks and stopped all meds. I almost died I remember my granddaughter bringing my shoes, and walking cane as I had back surgery, she said Nana doc my son said mom she's trying to tell you something. I went to the the hospital that day my sugar was 603. Rebellious nature can get you in trouble, I started discipline myself, and I do better for my family. We not only hurt ourselves with our actions, but we hurt the ones that love us too.
Hey Larry I know it's hard but once you get to where you want to be it get easier. Meaning your stable and if you have a spike day/ weekend easy to get back to your target. Keep up your plan and it will happen.
Good Monday morning again @A DiabetesTeam Member
I left another challenge that was really TOUGH!!!!!!
When I started taking insulin I went and got my prescription filled at the pharmacy; I received everything the doctor told me I was going to get. The nurse showed me the place on my body that I was going to inject insulin. Well the needle size the Pharmacist gave me was the big one; this was when I was switched from the bottle insulin to the insulin pens. I didn't take any insulin that night and the following day I stopped by the clinic and asked the unit nurse to look at the needles I was given. She so nicely explained that the needles come in smaller sizes and she called Pharmacist and he would not exchanged them because I open the box, but I was given some by the clinic that (Pharmaceutical people) give clinic when they are trying to get doctors to recommend their company. Whenever I used to pickup my prescriptions in person at the Pharmacy I would inspect my bag because the same Pharmacist would try to give me the big ones.
I use 32 gauge (fine point)
Last two cents π
Marvelous Monday @A DiabetesTeam Member morning
I had a number of challenges in my early days after being diagnosed with diabetes. For me having a family history of diabetes in the women in the family was a waiting game.
Challenges were as follows
Acceptance once I was diagnosed in my 40's.
Learning how to take medication on time, Metformin should not be taken on an empty stomach.
Learning to stick my fingers ( A nurse taught me to stick my finger without so much pain)
For the first few years I was doing well and A1C was really great, then I got sick of sticking my fingers all the time (rebellious and overwhelmed) So I stopped everything.
Well that was not good I felt really sick one day and I went to Urgent Care and the nurse did a finger stick and left me in the room. I heard the nurse talking to the doctor and they enter the room with a needle in the doctor hand she said "roll up your sleeve" The nurse wiped me with an alcohol pad and they left; all the doctor said that I was to sit there for a few minutes and she would be back. Half an hour pasted I start saying hello have you guys forgotten about me? the nurse came in and said they were waiting for my sugar to go down. I was in the room for an hour the doctor came and explained that my reading was 12.7 and she wanted it down before she had to send me to the hospital. I stayed for another hour and it slowly went down I was given an appointment for Monday morning and I kept it. From that point on I have been doing what I am told by my health team. I have had other episodes of rebelliousness but keep remembering that day. I am perfectly imperfect in doing things but I have learned to look for help when it comes to living with diabetes. This site has been so much help support wise and I tell some of my friends who also live with diabetes; hopefully they will try this site.
Okay that's my two cents! @A DiabetesTeam Member very good question!
